Fine Motor Skills and Fun: Letter Writing at Home

Ms. Shabria’s classroom at The Goddard School® of West Orange did a letter writing activity that combined handwriting, fine motor skills and fun! Students got to write, or draw, their own letters and then dropped them in the classroom mailbox. This activity is easy to replicate at home and can also be adapted based on your child’s age. For the littlest learners, they can practice holding markers or crayons and making marks on paper. Older kids can practice drawing, letter formation or writing words. Once finished, you could take a trip to your local post office and send the letter to a loved one. Or you could create a simple mailbox out of cardboard and send letters back and forth all day!

Materials
  • Paper Markers or colored pencils
  • Pencil Envelope (optional)
  • Stamp (optional)
Instructions
  1. Write a letter! Depending on your child’s age, they can practice holding a writing instrument and making marks on paper or they can work on writing words and sentences.
  2. Once done writing, add in some pizazz like drawings or stickers.
  3. If the letter will be mailed, have your child help you place it in an envelope and write down the recipient’s address. Don’t forget a stamp! Then take a trip to your local post office to drop it off.
  4. If using a handmade mailbox, you can create it using an old shoebox or a container with a decorated cover (like in the video). Then your little one can practice mailing letters whenever they want!
