 Latoya

Latoya

Director
I graduated from Harold Washington College with an A.A. in Child Development. While working as a teacher for children from birth through third grade, I chose to attend Aspen University where I began the path to completing my B.A. in Early Childhood Education. Later, I became an advocate for early childhood education and worked in policy reform on a state level. As an undergraduate, I realized how much I missed working directly with children and their families, yet I wanted to continue with administrative work in education. Therefore, I decided to return to working with children and their families in roles, such as Family Health Advocate, Family Support Specialist, and Director Designee. I later returned to Aspen University to complete my M.A. in Education with a focus on Transformational Leadership and later became an Assistant Director. I am excited to be a part of the Goddard team as Center Director, sharing my knowledge and skills with my fellow educators in order to bring forth the best learning experiences for students' all-around success. A fun fact about me is that I love nature but nature does not always love me but of course that does not stop me from gardening and exploring. I am passionate about children because I feel that if I can teach a young child something new that I have accomplished a true goal. When teaching children, they do not always know what is being presented to them so being able to get down on their level and teach them in a way that they understand is so important. My favorite children's books are The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.

Assistant Director
While earning my B.A. in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I got my first dose of education as an America Reads America Counts tutor at a micro-society K-5 elementary school. After crossing the stage, I got hired as an assistant teacher and quickly earned a lead teaching position, assisting with training incoming educators and opening new classrooms. In December 2017, I was blessed to become the mother to my little guy Aiden. To be closer to my family we picked up and moved back to Chicago where I stayed within the field as a lead preschool teacher at a Bright Horizons center. There, I trained under an amazing leadership team and thanks to their mentorship, I was awarded an Assistant Director here at the Goddard School. A fun fact about me is that I love watching Japanese anime cartoons and hope to travel there one day! My favorite aspect of early childhood education is that this is the place where young minds truly form and grow. At this young age, you truly get to see the way personalities form, the moment students take their first steps, and the formation of relationships. It amazes me just how much I have learned from my students let alone their parents and my peers. I am so happy to start this new journey with you and thank you for welcoming me into the Roscoe Village family! My favorite children's book is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch
