Whether you’re going to the beach, catching up on reading or spending all day in the garden, there’s no wrong way to enjoy the season. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are some of our favorite summer activities.

DIY Summer Adventures

Most of these activities can be done with things you already have on hand.

Counting Bubbles
Sprinkler Splashdown
Sand Creations
Water "Painting"

Practice counting with your child using bubbles—blow as many bubbles as possible in a minute and count them as they pop.

Throw a safe sprinkler splashdown in your yard by seeing who can stay the driest the longest. It’s a game no one can win! Or turn on some music and have a dance party around the sprinkler.

Become construction workers in the sand box. Help your child find some of the following items so you can create fun sand creations:

Muffin tins
Cake pans
Flowerpots
Ice cube trays
Silicon molds

Unleash your child’s inner artist by “painting” your driveway, patio or balcony. All you’ll need is:

Buckets
Water
Different size paint brushes
Optional: Sidewalk chalk to add some color

Make a Heart-Shaped Bubble Wand

Everyone loves bubbles, especially heart-shaped ones! Here are the items you’ll need to make your own:

6mm pipe cleaners
Scissors
Chopsticks
Pony beads (any color)
Colored tape (any color)

Create Your Own Sidewalk Chalk

Never run out of sidewalk chalk again. You may run out of space to color, though! Here are the materials you’ll need to create your own:

1 cup plaster of Paris*
¾ cup water
Different colors of tempera paint (powdered or liquid)
Disposable mixing bowls
Disposable spoons or stirrers
Silicone molds

*You can also use baking soda and cornstarch (or flour) instead of plaster of Paris, but the chalk won’t be as sturdy.
