Diwali, Festival of Lights

Festival of Lights

Submitted by Melwyn from New Jersey

Melwyn and his family celebrate Diwali, a five-day celebration known as the festival of lights. He and his family dress up in beautiful Indian clothing and give out give sweets boxes filled with laddus, kaju katli, barfi and dry nuts to everyone around the neighborhood. They decorate their home with lots of lights and head outside at night with sparklers. Melwyn makes sure everyone at his Goddard School also gets to celebrate by reading books about Diwali in class, drawing colorful rangoli with chalk and decorating the foyer with small lamps called diyas.
