Science fun all month long!
February 1, 2012
Science fun all month long!
This month we begin to learn about science! We will explore earth science, physical science and life science. This month will be full of observation, exploration and experimentation!

Who is a "scientist"?
February 2, 2012
Who is a "scientist"?
Before we become a scientist, we need to know what a scientist does! We will read the book What is a Scientist? by Barbara Lehan to begin a conversation about what scientist need to know and do.

Famous scientists
February 3, 2012
Famous scientists
Einstein, Edison, Aristotle and Galileo are some of the famous scientists we will learn about this month. We will discuss their inventions and discoveries and connect them to all the modern day luxuries and gadgets we have today!

Friendship Day!
February 6, 2012
Friendship Day!
We begin the week of the "Goddard Community Games" by having each classroom create a friendship circle. Each child will cross their arms in front of them and then hold the hands of the friends standing next to them!

Play Along Day
February 7, 2012
Play Along Day
Today we will encourage the older classrooms to spend time in the younger classrooms to show the value of being a mentor and a role model. The older children will spend some time teaching the little ones how to do a "big kid" art project!

Good Deed Day
February 8, 2012
Good Deed Day
We will be hosting a food drive to support local charities and food pantries. Feel free to drop off non-perishable foods in the big box in the foyer! Hopefully we can donate two giant boxes of food this year!

Goddard Cares Day
February 9, 2012
Goddard Cares Day
We will collect and mail our Goddard Cares postcards for our military men and women to let them know how much we appreciate and support their hard work to defend our country! Our goal is to mail over 100 postcards - we can only do it with your help!

Community Heroes Day
February 10, 2012
Community Heroes Day
We will have a visit from our local police and fire departments to celebrate our Community Heroes Day! They will discuss safety and stranger danger and we will present them with a giant "Thank You" card made by all the children in the school!

Open House
February 11, 2012
Open House
Goddard Community Games Open House
Come and "FLEX your mind and body" during our open house! We will be setting up developmentally appropriate physical activities and table top activities for the children to enjoy. We hope that Goddard School families will come together with community families to celebrate "Make a New Friend Day" while the children enjoy exploring our facility!

Vision
February 13, 2012
Vision
In order to be a scientist, the children will need to use their five senses to make observations and hypotheses! We will focus on what the children see around them today and bring awareness of how much information we gather through sight!
|
14
Smell
February 14, 2012
Smell
Today we will focus on our strongest sense, our sense of smell. Using scented oils and extracts, we will attempt to identify a variety of scents by placing the oil on a cotton ball and then in a small jar. When we use only our sense of smell, can we identify the scent?
|
15
Touch
February 15, 2012
Touch
Our sense of touch sends so much information to our brains! Did you know that babies do not have a good sense of touch? They get more information by placing everything in their mouths! As our fine motor skills improve, so does our sense of touch. We will examine objects in our "Feely Box" today using only our hands and we will see if we can identify them!
|
16
Taste
February 16, 2012
Taste
We all have 10,000 taste buds! We will do a taste test experiment today and use all four flavor senses as we taste salty, sweet, sour and bitter flavors.
|
17
Hearing
February 17, 2012
Hearing
There are sounds all around us that our ears and our brains need to distinguish! We will use a variety of familiar sounds and see if we all "hear" the same thing! This highlights how our all our senses work together to give us as much accurate information as possible!

Experiments!
February 20, 2012
Experiments!
We will be creating wacky, wild, educational (and often messy!) experiments all week long! Today we begin with a super starch experiment. This puts a new spin on "goop"! We will explore what happens when we mix cornflour and water and change it into a solid, then back to a liquid!
|
21
Reflection fun
February 21, 2012
Reflection fun
Using mirrors, flashlights and other objects, we will try to bend the light around objects by using reflections of the light! This lets us learn about how light bounces off flat shiny surfaces!

How old is this tree?
February 22, 2012
How old is this tree?
We will have a chance to look at several different pieces of wood to locate their rings. The rings tell a tree's story including how old it is and if it has been strong or weak throughout its life!
|
23
Bubbles!
February 23, 2012
Bubbles!
We will make our own bubble solution and use everyday objects to create our bubble wands! We will use funnels, straws, strawberry pints, wire pieces and plastic cups to blow bubbles of various shapes and sizes!
|
24
Color changing magic!
February 24, 2012
Color changing magic!
Using acids and bases allows us to change color of water! First we start with cabbage water, then we add vinegar. It will turn the water red! Then we add some baking soda to the water and after it foams, it turns the water back to blue!

Sun Dial
February 27, 2012
Sun Dial
Before modern technology, people followed time and seasons through the movements of the sun, moon and stars. Today we will make a sundial to learn how the sun can help us tell time. After finding the direction North, the sun's shadow will indicate what time it is!
|
28
Optical Illusions!
February 28, 2012
Optical Illusions!
We will examine a few of the most popular optical illusions! These will trick our brains into thinking dots are moving, wheels are spinning and colors are changing right before our eyes! This is a great science experiment that highlights how all our senses work together to make sense out of complicated visual information!

Tornado Jar
February 29, 2012
Tornado Jar
We will make a tornado in a jar by using a special piece of equipment that connects two 2-liter bottles together. When we fill one bottle halfway up with water then spin it quickly, we can create a tornado by turning the bottles upside down! Amazing weather science!
