Alien Abduction!
Children will listen to stories of what aliens might look like and why some people do, and do not, think they really exist. Afterwards, they will have the opportunity to draw their own alien according to what they think one might look like as well as naming him and the planet he comes from! The goal of this social science activity is to help promote creativity and expression of ideas.

Star Gazing
Children will use the star tubes to look at constellations and then we can create our own using star stickers and chalk. Our science activity is aimed at giving all children a basic understanding of space and enhancing their creativity.

Sun Spots
After discussing the sun and it's characteristics, we will take items outside to create our own sun art. Children can select multiple small items to place on a sheet of dark construction paper and then leave them outside to see what happens to the paper. Our science activity focuses on formulating a hypothesis and examining the results.

Feather Flight
Holding a feather and a piece of paper out to the sides, the teacher will then drop them at the same time. Before dropping them, children will make a guess about which one will fall the fastest. This science activity will work on strengthening our problem solving skills as well as creating a hypothesis and testing it to find the results.

Children can look at pictures of specific birds, then use a bird identification book to try locating the same bird. Our math center is focused on using observational skills to compare and contrast two pictures.

Using small twigs and string, children can work together to create their own bird nests. This center works to help enhance fine motor skills by requiring the children to interweave materials.

Bird Feeders
Each child will have the opportunity to create their own pine cone bird feeders. Using marshmallow fluff and birdseed, they will spread and roll the pine cones in each material, then hang outside the classroom window to observe birds eating them. Our social science center will help to enhance our teamwork skills.

Children will fly paper airplanes and using estimation and a yard stick, they will measure how far each went. This math skill will work on developing the concepts of estimation and measurement.

Using paper mache and balloons, children will create their own hot air balloons. They will use the paper mache to cover the balloon and when it is dry, paint them to display. This social science center will work on following directions as well as helping them to express their creativity.

Using a small soda bottle with some water in it, children can each take some time trying to spin it as fast as they can to create a tornado within the bottle. This science activity visually illustrates the appearance of a tornado and its funnel and gives children a more concrete concept of this weather pattern.

Children will observe a rain gauge that has been left outside since the first of the month and measure how many inches of rain has fallen in the month. Then it will be poured into a different shaped and sized containers. Is it the same amount? More? Less? This science center highlights the concept of "conservation" and problem solving.

One of our centers today will be to try keeping a tissue up in the air by blowing it up with our mouths in groups of two children. Then, they can try using a simple hand held fan to try keeping it up. Which one is easier? The goal of our social science center is to following directions, working together and communicating effectively with others.
